Laurel for Lunch: Jones County Spots for a Mid-Day Meal

While breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, we here in Laurel and Jones County look forward to when noon rolls around. Because when you’ve got a wide selection of piled-high sandwiches, gooey grilled cheeses, juicy burgers, BBQ and Italian cuisine, how can you not be excited to take a well-deserved lunch break? If you’re shopping around town, out exploring local sites or just taking a few minutes to yourself in the middle of your day, we’d like to encourage you to pull up a chair and chow down on some of our area’s finest.

Cheese Please

The Powhatan in Ellisville is known for their flavor-filled comfort food. If you’ve been there before, you know their savory grilled cheese option brings everyone to the table. It’s a unique take on a classic favorite you’ll never get tired of. And you simply must try their blue plate specials. Pair that with mouthwatering sides like squash dressing, okra fritters or double down on the cheddar with a helping of their mac and cheese.

Southern Fried Favorites

For more blue-plate bites, head over to Wilson’s Commissary for family-friendly menu items and an environment everyone can enjoy. As another local Southern comfort staple, we encourage you to try out their chicken and dumplings, country fried steak, pot roast and more. You’ll want to be sure to put in an order for the cobbler of the day as well. And the banana pudding? Equal parts fluffy and creamy, made just like grandma did.

The Best of Burgers

12pm is burger time at Barry’s, and you won’t want to miss it. With juicy patties, smothered cheese fries, milkshakes and more, this all-American menu is ideal for groups looking for a laid-back bite and a place to play outside for the little ones. Tikes can play in their fenced-in yard while parents treat themselves to a frosty ice cream snack, or a second helping of onion rings. Go ahead, you deserve it!

A New Take on Italian

When you think of Mimmo’s Ristorante Pizza, you probably think of deep-dish delights and other Italian favorites—like pasta bowls filled to the brim and loaded ravioli, but have you tried their sandwich options? Locals are raving about the cool caprese, seasoned-to-perfection Italian and classic chicken parmesan subs. Our recommendation would be to try them all for best results (and maybe pick up one for us too while you’re at it).

Smoked to Perfection

For our BBQ lovers and fans of pulled poultry and pork, we’d like to present Hog Heaven, Swamp Shack and Smokehouse of Laurel. For years, these local eateries have truly brought the smoke, and all the sensational savory flavors that come along with it. If you haven’t tried them yet, consider this your sign. Hog Heaven offers everything from signature sandwiches to unique takes on barbeque, Swamp Shack offers fall-of-the-bone ribs and Smokehouse of Laurel has daily specials that always leave you wanting more.

Well, if you’ll excuse us, we’re pretty hungry, and plan to follow this lunch trail all week long! For those of you interested in joining in on the lunch-lovers club, plan your stay to Laurel and Jones County. You (and your tastebuds) will be glad you did!
