There's nothing quite like the energy of the Diamond Youth World Series rolling into Laurel , the crack of the bat, the cheering families, and a community that knows how to host. But here's a little secret every visiting family figures out fast: the fun doesn't stop at the outfield fence. Between games, on rest days, and after the final out, Laurel and Jones County are full of ways to eat well, cool off, and explore. Here's how to make the most of every minute you're in town.
Game Day at the Sportsplex
Before you head to the field, a few things to know. The Laurel Sportsplex has 14 fields across the complex, free guest Wi-Fi keeps the family connected, and concession stands accept credit cards, no need to dig for cash. Can't make every game? Field cameras on every field livestream the action, so family and friends back home never miss a play. Opening ceremonies and team meals each week happen at the air-conditioned Magnolia Center, a welcome break from the South Mississippi summer.
Fuel Up: Where to Eat
Baseball and softball work up an appetite, and Laurel delivers. You'll find everything from quick grab-and-go to sit-down spots that can handle a hungry team, so don't be shy about calling ahead for large groups or to-go orders. And because summer means sweet treats as much as it means sports, save room: cool off with a scoop at The Laurel Creamery on North 6th Avenue, grab a cone at Bennie & Mae's Ice Cream, or head to North Magnolia Street for Shug's Cookie Dough and Candy Bar. For the full lineup of local dining, browse the Visit Laurel & Jones County trip planner.
Explore Downtown Laurel
If downtown Laurel looks familiar, that's because you've probably seen it on HGTV's Home Town. The brick streets that Ben and Erin Napier helped put on the map are a short drive from the Sportsplex and wonderfully walkable, you can line up boutique shopping, a coffee, and a bite all in one stop. It's the kind of charming, easy outing that makes a perfect break between games.
Rainy Day? Rest Day? No Problem
A rain delay or an open day on the schedule is just another chance to explore. Knock down a few pins at Country Lanes Entertainment just north of town off Highway 15, catch a movie at Southwest Theaters in Sawmill Square Mall, or spend it at Landrum's Homestead & Village, a beloved Laurel attraction just south of town. Families can wander a recreated 1800s Mississippi settlement full of historic buildings and hands-on demonstrations, with plenty of room for kids to roam and explore.
Soak Up Some Culture
Laurel punches well above its weight when it comes to arts and history. The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art , a world-class collection in the heart of the Laurel Historic District and the first art museum established in Mississippi, is free to visit. History buffs will want to stop by the Veterans Memorial Museum on Hillcrest Drive and the Laurel–Jones County Black History Museum & Arts on West 5th Street, and the Laurel–Jones County Library on Commerce Street is a cool, quiet spot to recharge.
