There’s something magical about October in Laurel and Jones County. The air shifts, there’s a buzz on the streets, and the whole town feels like it’s getting ready for something big. If you’ve never been here during this time of year, let me tell you—you’re in for a treat. October isn’t just about one event. Sure, we’re known for the Loblolly Festival, but this entire month is packed with celebrations, history, and the kind of community spirit that makes you feel like you’re right at home.
Let me take you back for a moment. Laurel wasn’t always the charming, creative town you see today. Our story starts with the Loblolly Pine—a tree that quite literally built this town. Years ago, a group of lumber barons was passing through on their way to Louisiana when their train broke down in what was, at the time, nothing more than a quiet stop in the middle of Mississippi. Now, they could’ve fixed the train and moved on, but as they looked around, they saw those towering pines and knew they’d found something special. So, they decided to stay. And because of that twist of fate, Laurel, Mississippi was born.
That’s the spirit we celebrate every October at the Loblolly Festival. It’s one of our biggest events of the year, and this year on October 5th, downtown Laurel will come alive with vendors, artists, food trucks, and people from all over ready to experience the charm of our town. If you’ve never been, imagine this: you’re walking down our brick streets, hand-dipped corn dog in hand (seriously, you have to try one—they’re my favorite), strolling from craft tent to boutique to art gallery, soaking in the energy of the day. The festival celebrates the history of our town, but it’s also a showcase of the creative, welcoming community we are today.
But before you head out to Loblolly, we’re kicking off the weekend in a special way. On October 4th, I’m teaming up with the hilarious Mary Ryan Brown for a comedy stand-up show at the historic Laurel Little Theater. This isn’t just any show—it’s a benefit for the theater, a place where I’ve done plays and musicals my whole life. To be able to perform on that stage, in the theater that holds so much history for me, and to give back to a place that’s given so much to this community? That’s something truly special. If you’re in town early, come join us for some laughs and help support the theater.
Now, while the Loblolly Festival is a huge part of October, it’s not the only thing happening. This month is packed with events that showcase the best of Laurel and Jones County. The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art (LRMA) has plenty going on, from weekly walking tours to a stunning photography exhibit, and Heritage Arts Festival on October 5th. You can experience Loblolly and catch some amazing art all in one day. And later in the month, don’t miss Light Up the Night on October 19th, where the whole town gathers to enjoy art under the stars—it’s one of those events that feels like pure magic.
For a taste of country life, head over to Landrum’s Homestead & Village on October 19th for their Fall Festival. Think hayrides, craft demos, and good ol' Southern cooking—it’s the perfect way to spend a crisp October day with the family. And speaking of fairs, don’t forget the South Mississippi Fair in Laurel from October 18th–26th. It’s the biggest event of its kind around here, with carnival rides, livestock shows, and more food than you can shake a stick at. Trust me, you’ll want to wear your stretchy pants for that one!
And, of course, October wouldn’t be complete without some Halloween fun. Bring the kids to Boo on the Avenues in Laurel’s historic district or Jones College’s Treats in the Streets in Ellisville during Halloween week for some good old-fashioned trick-or-treating. These are traditions that bring our community together, and whether you’re young or just young at heart, there’s something special about seeing downtown filled with families and laughter.
No matter what brings you to Laurel and Jones County this October, one thing is for sure—you’ll leave with memories that’ll stick with you long after you’re gone. Whether it’s the rich history we celebrate, the art that fills our galleries, or the people who make this place feel like home, there’s something here for everyone.
