A Taste of Laurel
First things first–it’s much easier to learn with a full stomach. Fill up on a hearty breakfast at Pause Cafe. Dine on a savory Avo Good Day bagel or indulge in Nana Banana bread–we’re getting hungry just thinking about it!
Perhaps bite into brain-powering goodness from Lee’s Coffee and Tea. Their warm breakfast sandwich pairs perfectly with a slice of avocado toast and a refreshing fruit cup.
For adults, fill your mug full of rich coffee at The Coffeehouse at Brookside to get your caffeine fix for the day! After all, you’ll need your energy for a full day ahead.
Stop 1: Lauren Rogers Museum of Art
After your meal, begin your day at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. This staple of the community is a great place to kick off your fun! Serving as Mississippi’s first museum, this establishment is consistently recognized as one of the best in the state and just celebrated its centennial last year. They provide arts education, carefully curated collections and breathtaking exhibits for your viewing pleasure six days a week–even on Sundays. Sign up for specialty workshops or tap into your inner artist with a class or just come enjoy this free attraction!
Stop 2: Laurel-Jones County Black History Museum and Arts
Next, check out the Laurel-Jones County Black History Museum and Arts. Here, visitors will learn about the history and contributions of African-Americans in Laurel and Jones County, as well as internationally. In operation since 2019, the museum has worked to preserve important artifacts and foster a welcoming place for conversations regarding African-American history and culture. Stop by to see special exhibits on some of Laurel’s most famous citizens, including renowned opera singer Leontyne Price and Olympian Ralph Boston.
Stop 3: Veterans Memorial Museum
Finally, take a trip to the Veterans Memorial Museum. Their mission is to honor the brave men and women who served our country and made such sacrifices for our nation. In addition to remembering these brave individuals, the museum also aims to provide community resources and education about our heroes. Guests can check out exhibits and displays such as the U.S.S. Arizona and Pearl Harbor exhibit, the AeroCommander 560-A exhibit, the U.S.S Cairo exhibit and so many more!
Signature Souvenirs
Before concluding your day, pick up some local art of your own from Hand + Made. This shop features a wide variety of gifts and collections that make the perfect addition to any home. You can even purchase a craft kit to DIY your decor!
If you’re a fan of HGTV’s “Home Town,” and we certainly are, then you’ll want to swing by the Laurel Mercantile to get your hands on artwork done by Erin Napier and handmade creations from the Scotsman Co. line.
